Sept 2008: The land was cleared and a bore hole for water dug. £2000 donated to the Trust was used for the borehole. The next stage was to build the security wall and get the irrigation system in place. Dec 2008: the perimeter wall was built and in January 2009 construction of the first house started. |
Water from the bore hole supplies the whole complex and is unlikely to dry up except in very severe drought. |
June 2009: One of our supporters visited Calvary Zion and supplied these photos of the building in progress. |

The new building will give the children more space and more privacy and a more homely atmosphere. The plan is to eventually be able to provide a home for

The project will also generate employment for the area for local people during the construction and on an ongoing basis. It is policy to employ single mothers to care for the children. This gives them accommodation, medical care and schooling for their children as well as an income. The farm will need to employ a farm manager and labourers. |
May 2010 : Les and his family are regular visitors to Calvary Zion and have supplied photographs to update on progress. They show how the land is supporting the rearing of goats and cultivation of crops to help feed the children. |

Susan the Chair of Calvary Zion Trust and Alison, one of the Trustees, visited Mombasa to catch up with Jane and see how the new Home is progressing. One of the recent changes is the purchase of a milk cow (called Gill). Gill will soon be having a calf so she will be able to provide milk for the children. There are also chickens which roam freely and produce eggs. Both the cow and the chickens were paid for through donations made to the Trust. One of the next priorities is to connect to the main sewers and electricity supply. |

Land Purchase
Thanks to generous donations Calvary Zion Childrens' Home has purchased some land where they are building a bigger, more comfortable home for the children. They currently live in a four bedroom house so their conditions are cramped and there is little privacy or space to play. The house is rented and the monthly rent payment of £200 per month is a drain on what little money is available.
The new home will have more space and a more homely atmosphere for the children. Some of the land will be cultivated which will mean a constant supply of fresh fruit and vegetables for the children. There will be room for chickens and goats to provide meat and eggs. This will reduce the monthly cost of feeding the children and the surplus sold at the local market will generate an income.
Very soon they will be able to move in to the newly built home. Here's how it has happened........
Tanja Fischer and Reiner Frank from Germany raised enough to allow Calvary Zion to buy 2.5 acres of land on which to build the new home.

Building
The building work is ongoing and great progress has been made. Materials are purchased and labour employed as funds are available. Donations come from many sources and the Trust welcomes input from other fundraisers. Sometimes local companies donate materials such as cement.
£720 raised from the Buy a Brick campaign and a fantastic effort by Tom Greaves meant the Trust were able to send out a large sum to pay for construction materials.
Here's the story so far about the construction project.
