Calvary Zion Children's Home Support Trust

Education Project

The Trust recognises that the key to the children’s future is a quality education.
To achieve this, the children are educated at private schools. This is because the class sizes are smaller and the teachers are more dedicated than in the state schools.
A budget of around £12,000 per year is needed for all the children to attend private schools

The cost to educate a child of primary school age is £300 a year
which includes school fees, uniform, sports kit, books & bag.

The cost of the secondary school is £585 per child.
This includes fees, board, uniform, books, personal
care items, tuck box, travel home and pocket money.

For their secondary education the children will ideally go to a boarding school in Nairobi.

Some advantages of the boarding school are:

  • The environment is more conducive to learning at the boarding school.
  • The home is noisy, overcrowded and the older children are needed to help with the younger children so studying is difficult.
  • It is a stepping stone towards independence.
  • The children have to take responsibility for organising themselves everyday – managing their money, washing their own clothes and getting to class, etc.
  • They still have the safety net of Calvary Zion during the holiday periods.

The Trust has secured funding for the education many of the children. However, we recognise that not everyone can make the commitment to sponsor a child on an ongoing basis but might want to contribute to part of the children’s education.
You could donate money towards schoolclothes or equipment for a child. Just let us know that your donation is for education and we will ensure that is where it is allocated.

Here is an idea of typical costs per child for a year:

  • Uniform £45
  • Books £30
  • Sports kit £20
  • Shoes £20
  • Bag £6
