Jambo from Susan in Mombasa
Firstly, no Kili success I am afraid to report!! We started trekking last Sunday (12th) and we trekked and camped for 4 days.
We reached an altitude of 15,000 feet above sea level and were above the clouds. On the 5th day we broke camp at midnight in order to be at the top for sunrise. After walking for uphill two hours I started to have a really rapid heart rate and severe headache. Up until then, I had only had a bit of nausea due to the altitude but it hit me so hard, I had to be taken down.

I stayed at Kibo Base camp for a couple of hours but the headache persisted so I walked the 12 miles down to the bottom and felt great. I had a check at the parks medical centre and was given the all clear. I was given the opportunity to camp at the bottom, but made the decision to go back to the hotel for a bit of TLC and a beer!

I was a bit disappointed but nobody knows how altitude will hit and is not something that can be trained for either.

I stayed in Moshi in Tanzania for a couple of days and then got the bus up to Mombasa. I took 7 hours because of the bumpy roads, but the wildlife was amazing. It also passed through real mud hut territory and a few Masai villages.
Jane met me off the bus in Mombasa and we went to see the kids at the home. They are all in great shape and started asking me if I remembered their names, bit of test as not seen them for three years and there are 45 of them now.
